Tom wears a separate under-shirt and drawers. He also could a union suit like his brothers. The separate under-shirt with drawers was somewhat more common for younger boys and girls. The undershirt can have long sleeves and should button down the front - probably only about half-way down the front - although completely down the front is possible (we guess). The underpants should be short and have a button fly in front. They don't button to the undershirt, but they might button to the underwaist, although not necessarily.

Tom trägt ein separates Unterhemd und Unterhose. Das Unterhemd kann kurze oder lange Ärmel haben. Vorne ist das Hemd geknöpft, entweder vom Kragen bis zum Saum (vermuten wir) oder auch nur bis zur Hälfte. Die Unterhose sollte kurz sein und vorne eine Knöpfleiste aufweisen. Die Unterhose wird nicht an das Unterhemd angeknöpft, kann aber an das Leibchen geknöpft werden, was aber nicht sein muss.

 

For a boy like Tom aged 4 in 1900, the underwaist is a common choice. If the underwaist has two rows of buttons, one row is for the underpants and the other row is for the knee pants. If the underwaist has only one row of waist buttons, these are for the trousers. There two garter tabs, probably with metal eyelets, on the boy's underwaist which are down at the sides where the safety pins of the hose supporters can be attached.
Some waists had buttons at the shoulder straps to allow for size adjustment.
Tom like his brothers might wear black long stockings, especially during the Winter. Unlike his brothers, he might also wear three-quater-length socks during the Summer. Another option are white long stockings as he is quite young. This would be primarily when he is dressing up.

Für einen 4-järigen Jungen wie Tom ist eine "Underwaist" (ein Art Leibchen, siehe Bild links) eine damals übliche Wahl.
Wenn die "Underwaist" unten zwei Knopfreihen hat, wurde an die eine die Unterhose, an die andere die Kniehose geknöpft. Die Unterhose musste nicht unbedingt angeknüpft sein. Gab es nur eine Knopfleiste, war sie für die Kniehose gedacht. An den Seiten wurden jeweils die Strumpfhalter befestigt. Einige "Underwaists" waren auch an den Schultern geknöpft, um in der Größe verstellbar zu sein. Im Gegensatz zu seinen Brüdern kann Tom um 1900 im Sommer auch 3/4 lange Strümpfe tragen. Aufgrund seines jungen Alters sind auch lange weiße Strümpfe (wie abgebildet) eine Option, besonders beim "Fein machen".

We have chosen a white tunic suit for Tom. There were different styles. We have chosen the saior style. Tom wears a sailor cap with his tunic suit. They were done in various colors. A white one was a dressy outfits. The Tunic Tom wears here would have probably been his best summer suit. The colored ones were often for play. Tunics outfits were called tunic suits because they were made with bloomer knickers that matched. We have seen tunics with kneepants, especially in Europe. American boys mostly wore bloomer knickers with elasticised leg closures. Note the double strap shoes. There were different styles with different numbers of straps. Later the single strap style would become more common, but there was quite a diversity of styles in 1900.
