and general fashion in general in 1900
The two older brothers wear union suits. The youngest could also worn
a union suit. But instead he got separat undershirt and underpants.
They would also have worn waist suits to hold up pants and long stockings.
All three boys would have worn long stockings along the younger boy
might have worn socks in the summer. If they had lived in the country
they might have gone barefoot, but these are city boys. Their outer
clothing, however would been quite different and affected by their
ages. Tom might have worn a tunic suit, Carl a sailor suit, and John
a Norfolk suit. There were a variety of other options. We have chosen
the outer clothing here as most representative of what three middle-class
boys might have worn.

Die beiden älteren tragen einteilige Hemdhosen als Unterbekleidung.
Der jüngere Bruder, Tom, hätte auch eine solche Hemdhose
tragen können. Statt dessen haben wir ihn in ein separates Hemd
und Hose gekleidet. Alle 3 Jungs tragen lange Strümpfe. Als Jungs
vom Land hätten sie auch barfuß sein können, aber
sie kommen aus der Stadt. Die Oberbekleidung weist Unterschiede auf,
die auch durch Lebensalter der Jungen bestimmt wird. Tom trägt
einen Kittelanzug, Carl einen Matrosenanzug und John einen Norfolkanzug.
Es gab eine Reihe anderer Möglichkeiten. Wir haben die Kleidung
der drei Brüder als besonders typische Modelle der Zeit um 1900
in den U.S.A. ausgewählt.

Underwear
Children very commonly worn union suits. Actually underwear in 1900
could be quite similar for both boys and girls. We should remember
that central heating was not common. It was necessary in cold weather
to dress warmly, even when indoors. Also separate undershirts and
drawers did exist. We will show some variation to indicate the different
types of underwear that were available. There was a choice of short
or long sleeves and a choice of whether the legs of the knee-length
underpants are close-fitting or loose. Here was no gender difference.
Boys and girls could wear any of these garments. The wrists of all
long-sleeve union suits were knitted elastically (like modern sweatshirts
or sweaters). There would have been drop-seats closed with buttons.
The ankle openings on the long-leg union suits were also knitted like
the wrists so that the legs would fit tightly like the sleeves. The
short-leg union suits were knitted also around the leg opening so
that they would cling tightly to the thigh. Union suits were made
with with knee-length and ankle-length legs. Both styles were worn
in 1900. Union suits with knee-length legs were worn with short sleeves.
The short legs and short sleeves always seem to go together. But boys
sometimes had short sleeves and long legs or long sleeves and long
legs. The only thing we don't see is long sleeves and short legs.

Unterbekleidung
Kinder trugen an Unterwäsche gewöhnlich einteilige Hemdhosen.
Die Unterwäsche von Jungen und Mädchen konnte um 1900 sehr
ähnlich sein. Wir sollten daran denken, dass eine Zentralheizung
zu diesen Zeiten nicht üblich war. Bei kalten Wetter war eine
warme Kleidung nötig, auch im Haus. Es gab auch einzelne Hemden
und Unterhosen. Bei den drei Jungen zeigen wir Variationen verschiedener
Unterbekleidung. Einmal hatte die Kleidung lange oder kurze Ärmel
oder Beine, eng oder locker sitzend. Das galt für Jungen wie
für Mädchen. Die Ärmel und Beine hatten elastische
Enden (wie bei modernen Pullovern). Hinten hatten die Hemdhosen eine
Klappe, die mit Knöpfen geschlossen wurde.

Support Garments and Hosiery
They would also have worn waist suits to hold up pants and long stockings.
The different worn support devices, although similar in function,
are actually different from each other. The choices could be affected
by age. One possibility is a sleeveless knitted bodice with rows of
buttons around the waist for attaching knee pants and other garments.
It also has two cloth loops at the sides for pinning on the hose supporters
for long stockings. The garters had safety pins at the top for attachment
to the underwaist. For a boy like Tom who was 4 years old, the underwaist
would be more usual or more common than the garter waist with shoulder
straps and belt that Carl might have worn. This support device has
adjustable shoulder straps that cross in back that attach to a web
belt with a front-button closure. The support devices are worn over
the other underwear which may have long or short sleeves. All three
boys would have worn long black stockings along the younger boy might
have worn socks in the summer. Tom's stockings might be white since
Tom is quite young.

Leibchen und Strümpfe
Die Kinder trugen eine Art Leibchen (waist suit) um die Hosen und

Outer Clothing
There outer clothing, however would gave been quite different and
affected by their ages. Tom might have worn a tunic suit, Carl a sailor
suit, and John a Norfolk suit. There were a variety of other options.
Some mothers might have dressed all three boys in sailor suits. Younger
boys Tom's age might still wear dresses. This was common in the 19th
century, but by the turn-of-the-20th century was beginning to go out
of style. Tom might have also worn a kilt suit in 1900 (but not later
in the decade). Many boy's Tom age by age 4 were already breeched
in 1900. Thus another option was a Fauntleroy suit and Carl might
also have worn this kind of suit as well. For more informal clothes
all three boys might have worn a blouse. Blouses were white as well
as colored or with patterns. Some were quite fancy. They were worn
with kneepants, although a boy Tom's age might have worn a kilt skirt.
The well-known choice, a sailor suit, consisted of headwear, dickey,
middy blouse or jacket, and pants. Although not part of the acutal
suit, they were commonly worn with long stockings. High-top shoes
were also very common. For Tom a sailor suit was as well an option
which he might have worn, because many manufacturers were making sailor
suits beginning in size 3 or 4. A tunic suit, the kind of suit Tom
is wearing, was a very popular garment for younger boys at the time.

Oberbekleidung
Die Oberbekleidung weist Unterschiede auf, die auch durch das Lebensalter
der Jungen bestimmt wird. Tom trägt einen Kittelanzug, Carl einen
Matrosenanzug und John einen Norfolkanzug. Es gab aber auch eine Reihe
anderer Möglichkeiten. Manche Mütter hätten alle drei
Jungen mit Matrosenanzügen eingekleidet.
Für Tom war ein Kiltanzug eine Option (aber nicht später
in diesem Jahrzehnt). Jungen in Tom's Alter trugen auch Kleider. Kleine
Jungen in "Mädchenkleidung" zu stecken war im 19. Jahrhundert
normal, zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts verschwand die Praxis aber
langsam. Um 1900 trugen viele Jungen mit vier Jahren schon Hosen.
Für einen Jungen war die erste Hose ein richtiges Ereignis, das
manchmal sogar in kleinem Rahmen gefeiert wurde.
Beliebt waren für kleinere Jungen auch Kittelanzüge. Eine
weitere Möglichkeit für Tom, aber auch für Carl, war
ein Fauntleroy-Anzug (Das Design dieses Anzuges war nach den Beschreibungen
und Illustrationen aus dem Roman "Der kleine Lord" von Frances
Hodgson Burnett gestaltet.).
Alle drei Brüder konnten bei informellen Gelegenheiten eine Bluse
mit Kniehosen tragen. Die Blusen gab es in verschiedenen Farben und
Mustern, sie konnten auch recht aufwändig gestaltet sein.
Eine beliebte Wahl war ein Matrosenanzug. Ein kompletter Matrosenanzug
bestand aus einer Kopfbedeckung, Bluse (mit oder ohne Latz für
den V-Ausschnitt) oder Jacke mit Matrosenkragen, in der Regel ein
schwarzes Tuch, das vorne verknotet war und Hosen.
Meistens wurden lange schwarze Strümpfe und Stiefel getragen.
