School Boy 1904
The photo below shows a school boy in 1904. He wears a sailor suit,
at the time highly popular for children. The sailor suit is made of
a striped cloth in light colours, probably white with light blue stripes.
The sailor collar has not the traditional V-front. The boy has a flat
cap although it is not very flat. Not the emblem on the front of his
cap. This kind of cap we have not seen this often this early in the
new century. It was a style more popular for American boys. He wears
long black stocking and leather lace-up high-top shoes. For school
the boy has a leather satchel. There is a eraser sponge for his slate
hanging from the satchel.

Das Photo unterhalb zeigt einen Schuljungen im Jahre 1904. Er trägt
einen Matrosenanzug, die damals so beliebte Kinderkleidung. Der Matrosenanzug
ist hell gestreift. Eine sehr wahrscheinliche Farbkombination könnte
weiß mit hellblau sein. Dazu hat er eine dunkle Schirmmütze,
die wir so früh in diesem neuen Jahrhundert noch nicht so häufig
bei jungen Knaben gesehen haben. Er trägt lange schwarze Strümpfe
und Schnürstiefel aus Leder. Für die Schule hat der Junge
einen Lederranzen. Am Ranzen hängt ein Schwamm für die Schiefertafel.
Family 1905
The photo below shows a family with father, mother and two children.
The little boy wears a sailor suit. the sailor blouse is made of light
striped cloth and a concealed button facing. He wears dark bloomer
knickers, long dark stockings and leather lace-up high-top shoes.
Note his close cropped hair. The girl wears a dress made of light
cloth. Also a little girl's dress had to have a high collar. Below
there is some smocking, so the dress is rather roomy around the chest.
The sleeves are done in two big puffs on each side. Cuffs and collar
are trimmed with lines and circles. The skirt has a valance(?). The
father has a stiff collar with bow tie and wears a rather formal boiled-front
stiff shirt. Mother's hair is taken back and apparently gathered to
a bun. Her dress has the "obligatory" high collar. On her
chest is a vertical panel of smocking. The sleeves are slightly ruffled
in the sleeve crown. The skirt has plain cut.
Familie 1905
Das Photo unterhalb zeigt eine Familie mit Vater, Mutter und zwei
Kindern. Der kleine Knabe trägt einen Matrosenanzug. Die Matrosenbluse
ist hell gestreift und hat eine verdeckte Knopfleiste. Dazu trägt
er eine dunkle Hose, lange dunkle Strümpfe und Schnürstiefel
aus Leder. Das Mädchen trägt ein Kleid aus einem hellen
Stoff. Auch bei einem solche kleinen Mädchen fehlt der Stehkragen
nicht. Unterhalb des Kragens ist das Kleid gesmockt, so dass darunter
locker fällt. Die Ärmel sind in zwei großen Puffen
gearbeitet. Bündchen und Kragen sind mit eine Besatz aus Streifen
und Kreisen geschmückt. Der Rockteil hat einen Volant (?). Der
Vater trägt einen steifen Kragen mit Fliege und steifem Vorhemd
(?). Das Haar der Mutter ist rundherum nach hinten zusammen genommen
ist dort wahrscheinlich zu einem Knoten gebunden. Ihr Kleid hat einen
"obligatorischen" Stehkragen. Auf der Brust ist ein vertikales
Stück in Smock-Technik gearbeitet. Die Ärmel sind der in
der Armkugel leicht gekräuselt. Der Rock ist glatt geschnitten.
Beachside Café 1909
The photo below shows a beachside café in August 1909. Noticeable
are the big hats worn by the women and that are strapped with shawls
or scarfs. The men mostly wear military looking peaked caps but we
also see a flat cap and a bowler. In the foreground (right) we see
a girl and a boy. She wears a double breasted jacket, a pleated skirt
of plaid cloth and a wide brimmed sailor hat. He wears a blouse and
knee pants with a flat cap.
Strandcafé 1909
Das Photo unterhalb zeigt ein Strandcafé im August 1909. Auffällig
sind die großen Hüte der Damen, die sie zumeist mit Tüchern
oder Schals festgebunden haben. Die meisten Herren tragen Schirmmützen.
Rechts oben sieht man allerdings auch einen Bowler. Im Vordergrund
stehen rechts ein Junge und ein Mädchen. Der Knabe trägt
einen Blusenanzug, das Mädchen eine zweireihige Jacke mit kariertem
Faltenrock.
